Locals demanding rail line through Malshej Ghat for over 25 years

MUMBAI: People in the rural pockets of Thane, Pune and Ahmednagar districts have been forced to use a narrow two-lane road for their day-to-day commuting in the absence of train connectivity. For more than 25 years, these people have been demanding a railway route covering their areas, but nothing has been done by authorities concerned.

The road, which is part of national highway 222, passes through Malshej Ghat, where 27 people lost their lives after the bus they were travelling in collided with a truck and plunged into a 400-ft valley on Thursday. A few years ago, local NGOs had proposed that a rail route be started from Kalyan to Ahmednagar that would pass through Murbad, Tokawade, Otur, Malshej Ghat, Aalephata, Junnar etc.

"Railways had also done a feasibility study after we submitted a proposal to the then railway board chairman Vivek Sahay in 2010. But later they turned it down on the grounds that the route will not be commercially viable," said Pramod Hindurao, chairman of CIDCO, who is associated with NGO Rail Parishad. - Pradeep Gupta

Highly populated areas like Murbad, Tokawade, Otur, Aalephata, Junnar are still using the NH 222 as the only road for its connectivity to the state capital despite being located barely 100 kilometers from the metro.

The locals claims that if railway has taken matter serious and had filled their demands then such accident would had never happened on the route.

Amit Jangam resident of Kalyan who has his village near Otur in Pune gramin said, "The only medium to go our village is public buses or private cars and both are risky for travel while railway comes under safe transportation system".

People from talukas like Murbad in Thane district , Junnar in Pune district, Sangamner and various other places in Ahmednagar district have been forced to use the two lane narrow road transport as there is no other means of transport at these places.

They have been waiting for a railway line since more than twenty five years for railway services to start on this route which stretches up from industrial town Murbad up to tip of Ahmednagar.

The national highway number 222 starts from Kalyan and goes up to Andhra Pradesh, it passes through one of the most dangerous ghats at Malshej where the ill fated MSRTC bus fell into a 350 foot deep valley killing twenty seven people and left ten injured.

The proposals made by several NGO's from these places have seen no results till date and this is the reason that people are left with no other option but use the road route which passes through the 17 kilometer treacherous ghats of Malshej.

The proposal was to start a rail route extending beyond Kalyan and then go up to Otur in the first phase and then could be extended further to interior areas of Pune Gramin district and Ahmednagar district.

The elaborate plan also mentions that how these routes could be further connected to the existing routes ahead in Pune and Ahmednagar making connectivity much easier and better for people residing or traveling to these places.

"Railways had also done a feasibility survey of the areas for which we had submitted proposals of a railway route and in 2010 then railway board Chairman Vivek Sahay had also shown interest but they did not take it further as they found not profitable enough to start a railway line there for people in those areas. We were surprised to know this when railway did not take forward the proposal on such grounds, they did not care for public welfare" said Pramod Hindurao who runs the NGO Rail Parishad and is presently Chairman of CIDCO, Navi Mumbai.

Hindurao said at least taking lesson from the road accident case the Railway should rethink about proposal in public favor.

Activist urges Centre to give nod to Kalyan-Murbad rail project

Thane: The Murbad Bachao Janandolan Samiti (MBJS) has urged the Centre to give nod to the Kalyan-Murbad-Malshej Ghat-Otur via-Ahmednagar rail route project.

In a memorandum sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister DV Sadananda Gowda on Friday, MBJS convener Amol Anant Pawar said the project, which will provide better connectivity in three districts of Thane, Pune and Ahmednagar, is on paper for last 25 years.
This rail route will save time of the passengers, increase the state`s income as well as decrease the accidents on the downhill of Malshej Ghat, Pawar said in the letter.

Pawar told PTI that as per the information gathered by him during his follow-up on the mega project, on this 250 km rail route, there will be 25-26 stations. This route is adjacent to the National Highway 222.
Since Malshej Ghat is a well-known tourist destination, the rail route there will provide better and fast connectivity to the people, he added.

Rail Ministry undertakes Kalyan-Ahmednagar rail line survey
By: PTI Date: 2008-10-19 Place: Thane

The Railway Ministry has undertaken a survey of around 250 kms railway line between Kalyan and Ahmednagar which will see the light of the day in the coming years.

This information is given in a Right to Information by the Central Railway to the Railway Passengers Association.

The President of the Association Om Prakash Sharma, had in a query to the Indian Railways sought information on the status of the project which was pending for a long time.

Giving details of the status of the project it is stated that updating the survey for the new line from Kalyan to Ahmedanagar (246 kms) had been included in the pink book in the year 2006-07 and the survey was in progress. It is most likely that the project will be included in the next rail budget.

The reply also stated that the traffic survey from Kalyan to Ahmednagar new BG line via Murbad (204 kms) was carried out in April 2000, and report submitted to Railway Board.

The project cost was of Rs 772.11 crores with the rate of return of (ROR) 0.55 per cent, Railway Board shelved the project on May 01, 2000 due to non-remunerative nature of the line and acute constraints of resources.

The letter stated that the board had now asked to update the survey report with a fresh survey which is now under way.

It is also learnt that the decision on the new railway line which will connect the three districts of Thane, Pune and Ahmednagar will be taken by the Railway Board after the submission of the updated survey report.
